My Perfect Philly Saturday

Happy Monday, everyone! Today, I’m doing something a bit different. I’m linking up with some awesome fellow Philly bloggers and we’re all talking about our perfect Philly Saturdays. I'm loving this PHL Bloggers community! At the bottom of this post I'll have all of their links so you can check out their blogs.

For those of you who are new to my corner of the internet universe, welcome! I’m Julie Lenard, The Storyologist, scholar of stories, writing consultant, writing coach, and editor. My weekly blogs involve musings on stories of all kinds. Thanks for stopping by!

Now, onto the topic at hand - Philly Saturdays. Ah, weekends in Philly. I treasure them because for me, they’re few and far in between. I’m that girl who spends most of her weekends traveling on the Megabus (oh the tales I could tell). Yet, throughout my 8 (yes 8) years in Philly, I've learned to call Philly home, and I’ve cultivated my personal version of the perfect Philly Saturday. Don’t you just wish Saturday started with a P? That alliteration would have been amazing. Yes, I'm what you might call a words nerd, and proud of it.

My ideal Saturday starts with a tea at Greenstreet Coffee and a stroll around my neighborhood. I love when it’s that early morning Saturday feel, you’ve got the whole weekend ahead of you, and the city just seems to be waking up.

Next, I'll go to yoga, which of course requires some motivation from a good friend (who really wants to sweat so much in the morning?). Yet, when I do manage to go to a yoga class on Saturday, I feel like I’ve set myself up for a really great day. I’m loving Yoga on the Banks right now. There's just something about looking up at blue sky while straining in some crazy yoga twist that makes it that much better.

I'm usually starving after yoga. In fact, while in savasana, I usually plan my next meal out in my mind. My friend and I used to completely cancel out the benefits of yoga by having nachos and beer after we finished a class. Don't judge. Brunch is the main Saturday event, and there are so many amazing brunch places in the city, but when the weather is nice, I prefer a picnic. I tend to choose Washington Square over Rittenhouse - just a little more peaceful.

You can imagine where this Storyologist wants to wander to next. Philly has some amazing bookstores. Some of my favorites - The Book Trader, Mostly Books, and Book Corner. It's hard for me to not wander out of a bookstore with a stack of books to go in my non-existent extra bookshelf.

Books, Glorious Books....

One of my favorite past times is to get out into nature, even if it's only for a few hours. Luckily, my friend Meredith of Cool Goon Productions and her adorable pup Gigi are always up for a hike. This is Gigi, frustrated because she can't catch the ducks in the Wissahickon. You should check out my friend Meredith's website - her photos are way better than this one!

Poor Gigi!

There's always tons of fun stuff happening in Philly during the summer, like Spruce Street Harbor, the amazing pop-up park on the Delaware. You have to be pretty sneaky to get a hammock. I snagged one for my boyfriend L and I. Aren't you impressed?

I may have stolen this hammock from some children. Maybe.

As for the Philly Saturday night life? A few years ago, I frequented Silk City, mostly for their sweet '90's dance parties. Now, I would rather cook with friends, preferably if they have a grill or roof deck. It may sound tame, but we can get pretty creative - one time we cooked an entire meal of carrots. It turned out surprisingly well. Yeah, I'm not sounding any cooler, am I. I'm going to quit while I'm ahead.

Carrot everything.

Carrot everything.

That's my ideal Philly Saturday. I'm glad I got to share a little snippet of my life and now, I would love to hear from you. What do you like to do on a Saturday in your respective cities?
